Origins and Cultivation

  • Origin:Native to China, primarily cultivated in southeastern Gansu province (especially Min County for its high quality and quantity), with Yunnan, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Hubei also producing significant amounts.

Physical Characteristics

  • Appearance:The dried roots are cylindrical with 3-5 or more lateral roots, measuring approximately 15-25cm in length. The outer skin is fine and dense, with a yellowish brown to brownish color, displaying longitudinal wrinkles and horizontal lenticels.
  • Root Head:Diameter ranges from 1.5-4cm, featuring circular rings and remnants of purple or greenish stems and leaf sheaths.
  • Main Root (Gui Shen):Has an uneven surface.
  • Lateral Roots (Gui Wei):Diameter varies from 0.3-1cm, tapering from top to bottom, often twisted, with traces of fine roots.

Growth Habits

  • Plant Morphology:A perennial herb reaching 0.4-1 meters in height, with erect stems that are purple and bear longitudinal grooves. The leaves are 2-3 pinnately compound, with petioles 3-10cm long and sheath-like bases. The flowering period spans from June to July, with fruiting from June to August.
